Stop Outdoor Faucets from Freezing This Winter!
Fort McMurray winters are quite cold and can certainly take a toll on our homes, especially the pipes. The pipes that are inside your home are often insulated from the winter weather, but the pipes that connect to the outdoor faucets are susceptible to the freezing weather. When pipes freeze, they expand and are highly likely to burst and cause water damage.
Ways To Protect Your Outdoor Faucets:
- Drain the lines before the outside temperature starts to go down and the freezing winter weather comes. Draining the pipes is quite easy to do. First you need to turn off the valve that controls the outdoor faucet water flow. Then, open the outside faucet and allow to drain completely. Remove any additional attachments or hoses to make draining easier. Pipes are unable to freeze if there’s no water in the lines.
- Another alternative if you are unable to turn off and drain the lines are to install a frost-free hose bib. The bib will replace the outdoor faucet and run into the side of the house where the shut off control valve is located which creates a specific valve for the faucet to make draining easier.
- It’s best to disconnect your hoses during the fall, before winter arrives. The hose still holds water, even when the faucet is shut off, therefore the water can still freeze, and pipes can still burst once the temperature drops.
