Common Methods for Heating Your Home
Living in Northern Alberta, we know how cold the winters can be. It’s necessary to have a fully functioning heating system in your home. There are different kinds of heating systems available. Read below to see the most common methods for heating your home.
- Furnace – A furnace creates heat by pushing hot air from its ducts and circulating it through the house’s air registers. Furnaces can be powered by either electricity, oil, or natural gas. Because these systems are quite reliable, furnace heating is popular in Canada. To be sure your furnace continues to be reliable and functioning properly, you must have it serviced according to the manufacturer’s specifications. The only downside in using a furnace to heat your home, is that it can sometimes make your monthly hydro bill costly, especially during the colder months.
- Hot Water Boilers – A hot water boiler, or hydronic system are often found in apartment buildings, or older homes. Boiler systems pass hot water through radiators that produce and discharge heat from the water. Hot water boilers distribute the air more evenly than a furnace and don’t create noise during operation. The downside of a boiler is that they are typically more expensive to install and maintain.
- Heat Pumps – Heat pumps source heat from the environment and distribute it as warm air throughout your home. A heat pump is one of the most eco-friendly option and can also reverse their function and produce cool air during the summer months. The downfall with using a heat pump, is that they are best to be used in milder climates and don’t often preform well below -5°C, which doesn’t make them a good option for the cold Alberta winters. Some people choose to get the heat pump to use during the milder months and rely on another heating source when the temperatures drop.
