5 Steps to Take Before Turning On Your Air Conditioner This Summer

The winter is done, and the weather is heating up. You’ll want to turn on the air conditioner. Your AC will require some maintenance after several months of being idle. Having an air conditioner that produces hot air or doesn’t operate properly is the last thing you probably want to deal with.

Steps to Follow Before Turning on Your Air Conditioner

Whether you used your air conditioner during the winter or not, it’s always a good idea to check it out now to make sure it’s ready for summer. Remember to include these on your to-do list:

  1. Inspect and Clean the Unit’s Condenser – The condenser, which is located outside of your home, is an important part of the heat exchange process. Make sure it isn’t blocked by anything before turning the AC on. By hosing down the coils, you can ensure that the unit is free of dirt and debris. Check the refrigerant lines and the electrical systems for insulation.
  2. Check Air Filter – Depending on the type of air filter you use, you should replace your air filter every 30 to 90 days. A clean filter improves the efficiency of your air conditioner while also screening impurities from the air you breathe. If you don’t change these filters, air movement will be restricted and your air conditioner’s efficiency will decline.
  3. Inspect Your Ducts and Vents – If your ventilation system is clogged, you will waste cool air and, worse still, electricity. Remove any items clogging the vents, such as furniture, clothing, or toys. Check that any visible ducting is in good condition and that any joining seams are also not sloppy.
  4. Prepare for Test-run – Assess the circuits and turn on the condenser’s breaker or disconnect switch. Then switch on your thermostat and set it to the setting you want, which should turn on the entire unit. Finally, look outside to see if the condenser’s fan is functioning and that it sounds OK.
  5. Schedule Annual Maintenance – It’s best to schedule a checkup with a professional technician as soon as possible if you notice or experience anything unusual during your test run. Your HVAC system should be serviced at least once a year for both heating and cooling seasons. A professional HVAC expert will do a comprehensive tune-up, ensuring that your system is ready for the coming months.
